The Dukomezanye cooperative in Makamba has only 24 members. For growing season A, they cultivated 1 hectare—half a hectare for corn and half a hectare for beans. Luck did not smile on this young cooperative led by Mariam Ndayikengurukiye. Not only were weather conditions unfavorable, but the severe lack of fertilizers also contributed to ruining the harvest. The cooperative harvested less than 100 kg of corn and beans combined. These are five piglets intended to help strengthen pig farming in the Ijenda community through the DUFASHANYE cooperative. The aim is to help fulfill the core mission of the parent association, AEVCPV: empowering vulnerable communities in Burundi through sustainable farming and livestock practices, strengthening food security, improving livelihoods, and fostering socio-economic resilience. Ijenda is a tea-growing region. According to Eric NDAYISABA, in his dissertation: THE TEA-GROWING REGION OF IJENDA (BURUNDI): ECONOMY AND SOCIETY 1965–2011, presented in 2016, pig farming in Ijenda is a widespread subsistence agropastoral activity, but mainly practiced on a small scale by households. It is a pillar of the local economy of the high plateaus. Eric Ndayisaba writes that pig farming in this part of the country is an asset for agriculture because, in his view, it is closely intertwined with farming (market gardening and tea cultivation). It is mainly sought for the production of high-quality organic manure, essential for fertilizing the soils.

According to the population of Ijenda, pigs are often sold in local markets such as Kanyosha or Bujumbura to generate occasional income and finance household needs.

With its 86 members, the Gitega cooperative, a member of the AEVCPV association, harvested 964 kilograms of maize. According to Joséphine Ntirandekura, head of the cooperative, growing season A was not very successful. On the two hectares farmed, this manager estimates that their cooperative could have harvested at least one ton of maize if all conditions had been met.

Jean Marie Bigirumuremyi, president of the AEVCPV, also acknowledges that the Gitega cooperative’s activities were somewhat disrupted by the delay of FOMI fertilizer. “The funding for this cooperative was released a bit late,” notes Jean Marie Bigirumuremyi. We thank God for all the successes we continue to achieve within our cooperative. From a small cultivated area, we were able to harvest a ton of rice. These were the words J. Claude Hategekimana, president of this cooperative, used to express his satisfaction at the progress his cooperative continues to make. According to him, the cooperative grew rice on a very small area as a trial, but it became clear that the harvest was satisfactory. This success in rice farming comes after that of maize cultivation. Claude Hategekimana believes his cooperative owes its success to the dedication of its members. TUKOMEZANYE COOPERATIVE DE MUYINGA has more than 450 members, and membership applications are increasing more and more. Its president, Claude Hategekimana, believes what encourages members and attracts others is the fact that the cooperative has already shown it can support its members and even their non-member neighbors. For growing season A, the Minago cooperative farmed 2 hectares of land. This 37-member cooperative grew a bean-and-maize combination there. Unfortunately, the harvest was poor. In the end, the cooperative harvested only 651 kg of maize and less than 20 kg of beans. According to the cooperative’s leaders, the weather was not favorable. In addition, the fertilizer problem—fertilizers having become extremely scarce and expensive in Burundi—did not spare the Minago cooperative.

However, the leaders of this cooperative are not giving up. They say that certain obstacles have been identified and that solutions will be put in place to improve production in the coming seasons.

As the Minago cooperative is a member of the AEVCPV association, its president also plans to support the cooperative to help it get back on its feet. “We acknowledge that the harvest was not good for this cooperative. It is a major loss for them and for AEVCPV as the parent association. We will provide them with the means so they can continue the program,” promised Jean Marie Bigirimuremyi, President of AEVCPV.

The Muyinga cooperative in northeastern Burundi produced over 4 tons of maize during the A growing season. This production is considered satisfactory by the cooperative’s officials.

For the A growing season, TUKOMEZANYE MUYINGA COOPERATIVE cultivated just over 2 hectares of maize. The harvest was good. Officials of this cooperative estimate the production to be between 4 and 5 tons of maize. J. Claude Hategekimana, head of this cooperative, which has over 450 members, indicates that their cooperative owes this result to the diligent work of each of its members. J. Claude Hategekimana thanks Alice Ndayikengurukiye, representative of the AECPV association in Europe. ”She spares no effort to ensure that the various cooperative members of the AECVP association move forward,” he testifies. The Cankuzo cooperative harvested over 4 tons of corn for the single growing season A. This brings satisfaction to AEVCPV members.

Four tons and 208 kg — this was the corn harvest achieved by the Cankuzo cooperative in the current province of Buhumuza for growing season A, running from September 2025 to January 2026. A member of the association Visionary Agri-Breeders for the Fight Against Poverty and Vulnerability, AEVCPV, the Cankuzo cooperative cultivated 4.5 hectares this season. This means the average yield was one ton per hectare. This is a source of satisfaction for Kankindi Agrippine, head of this cooperative. For her, this harvest was the result of dedicated work from each of the cooperative’s more than 270 members.

This also brings satisfaction to Jean Marie Bigirimuremyi, president of AEVCPV, who takes the opportunity to thank everyone contributing to the smooth running of this project, which aims solely to combat poverty and vulnerability among the Burundian population.

Kirundo province, particularly in the Busoni commune, illustrates the positive impact of
