Persistent irregularities in Fomi fertilizer distribution: A barrier to a good harvest.

In central Burundi, the Gitega cooperative, a member of the AEVCPV association, harvested less than one ton of maize from two hectares during growing season A. The cooperative’s leaders consider this a poor yield. This relatively low harvest is largely attributed to the delay in the delivery of FOMI fertilizers.

With its 86 members, the Gitega cooperative, a member of the AEVCPV association, harvested 964 kilograms of maize. According to Joséphine Ntirandekura, head of the cooperative, growing season A was not very successful. On the two hectares farmed, this manager estimates that their cooperative could have harvested at least one ton of maize if all conditions had been met.

Jean Marie Bigirumuremyi, president of the AEVCPV, also acknowledges that the Gitega cooperative’s activities were somewhat disrupted by the delay of FOMI fertilizer. “The funding for this cooperative was released a bit late,” notes Jean Marie Bigirumuremyi. Even once the funding was released, the distribution of FOMI fertilizer was delayed.

Jean Marie Bigirumuremyi further indicates that the cooperative still has bags of FOMI fertilizer in stock that were not used because they arrived too late.
