The aim is to help fulfill the core mission of the parent association, AEVCPV: empowering vulnerable communities in Burundi through sustainable farming and livestock practices, strengthening food security, improving livelihoods, and fostering socio-economic resilience. Ijenda is a tea-growing region. According to Eric NDAYISABA, in his dissertation: THE TEA-GROWING REGION OF IJENDA (BURUNDI): ECONOMY AND SOCIETY 1965–2011, presented in 2016, pig farming in Ijenda is a widespread subsistence agropastoral activity, but mainly practiced on a small scale by households. It is a pillar of the local economy of the high plateaus. Eric Ndayisaba writes that pig farming in this part of the country is an asset for agriculture because, in his view, it is closely intertwined with farming (market gardening and tea cultivation). It is mainly sought for the production of high-quality organic manure, essential for fertilizing the soils.

According to the population of Ijenda, pigs are often sold in local markets such as Kanyosha or Bujumbura to generate occasional income and finance household needs.

A total of 32,631 households are affected by the drought throughout the commune of Busoni. According to the report provided by the communal administrator François-Xavier KARENZO on June 5, 2026, the most affected zone is Gisenyi. Out of 9 hills, it has 10,330 affected households, with Gisenyi hill being the most affected of all. However, the most affected hills in the entire commune of Busoni are located in the Busoni zone. In this zone, the most affected hills are Getete and Gatare with 2,016 and 2,012 affected households respectively.

A resident of this commune contacted reveals that some households find themselves forced to sell some of their most precious belongings to enable fathers or adult sons to travel far beyond Burundi’s borders, to Tanzania, Uganda and sometimes even Kenya to try to find ways to save their families.

Rainfall deficits regularly devastate crops, prompting local administration and organizations to launch an urgent appeal for humanitarian aid to rescue thousands of households threatened by famine.

Already in February 2026, the Rapid Needs Assessment Mission in localities affected by water deficit in Busoni and Kirundo had stated in its report that more than 106,400 households in the 2 communes are affected, of which more than 47,900 need emergency humanitarian assistance.

AEVCPV is a Burundian international association dedicated to fighting poverty and vulnerability. It is mobilizing in response to this call for help. We thank God for all the successes we continue to achieve within our cooperative. From a small cultivated area, we were able to harvest a ton of rice. These were the words J. According to him, the cooperative grew rice on a very small area as a trial, but it became clear that the harvest was satisfactory. This success in rice farming comes after that of maize cultivation. Mrs. Ndorimana Espérance is one of the beneficiaries of these cards. She is a mother of 5 children and was abandoned by her husband, who has been in Bujumbura for years. This vulnerable woman received a CAM card provided by TUKOMEZANYE MUYINGA COOPERATIVE, even though she is not a member. For her, this cooperative came at just the right time. “Before, I couldn’t get treatment for myself or my children. When we fell ill, we would look for medicine in pharmacies, and we couldn’t even afford a full course of treatment. But today, with this card, we can get proper medical care,” she testified. Ndorimana Espérance thanks the cooperative’s leaders and implores them to continue their support.

This initiative is in its 1^st year, but according to J. Claude Hategekimana, the cooperative’s manager, it should continue and benefit even more families. “As long as we have the means, we will continue to assist the most vulnerable of our members and some of their neighbors, and we even plan to expand the list,” declared J. For growing season A, the Minago cooperative farmed 2 hectares of land. This 37-member cooperative grew a bean-and-maize combination there. Unfortunately, the harvest was poor. In the end, the cooperative harvested only 651 kg of maize and less than 20 kg of beans. According to the cooperative’s leaders, the weather was not favorable. In addition, the fertilizer problem—fertilizers having become extremely scarce and expensive in Burundi—did not spare the Minago cooperative.

However, the leaders of this cooperative are not giving up. They say that certain obstacles have been identified and that solutions will be put in place to improve production in the coming seasons.

As the Minago cooperative is a member of the AEVCPV association, its president also plans to support the cooperative to help it get back on its feet. “We acknowledge that the harvest was not good for this cooperative. It is a major loss for them and for AEVCPV as the parent association. We will provide them with the means so they can continue the program,” promised Jean Marie Bigirimuremyi, President of AEVCPV.

The AEVCPV association’s hospital construction project in Cankuzo is expected to cost over eight hundred thousand US dollars. A plot of land spanning more than 2 hectares in the Cankuzo health district has been chosen to house this facility. This site is valued at nearly seventy million Burundian francs, a contribution from the association’s members. AEVCPV is relying on funding from international organizations to build this hospital. According to J. Marie Bigirumuremyi, president of the association, the choice of Cankuzo was dictated, firstly, by the precariousness of the healthcare infrastructure in this part of the country. According to health authorities of the former Cankuzo province, the precariousness of health structures in Cankuzo primarily stems from geographical isolation, a deficit in human and material resources, and household poverty. Secondly, the choice of Cankuzo was dictated by the lack of quality private hospitals in this district and its surroundings, as well as its proximity to the Tanzanian border. The hospital will therefore need to accommodate patients from neighboring provinces or beyond Burundi’s borders. “The AEVCPV association’s hospital will prioritize vulnerable individuals. It should have more than 5 doctors and 120 nurses and caregivers,” stated Jean Marie Bigirumuremyi, president of the association. “The hospital will have a mental health department and specialization in surgery, especially C-sections,” added Jean Marie Bigirumuremyi.

Officials of this cooperative estimate the production to be between 4 and 5 tons of maize. J. Claude Hategekimana, head of this cooperative, which has over 450 members, indicates that their cooperative owes this result to the diligent work of each of its members. J. Nearly 20 chickens died just a few days after they were distributed to the DUKOMEZANYE cooperative in Kabezi. Local veterinarians have tried to save the poultry, but without success. Pig farming could replace this poultry.

On March 21 this year, the AEVCPV association distributed 40 chickens to one of its members, the DUKOMEZANYE cooperative in Kabezi. It was a batch of imported-breed chickens: 30 females and 10 males. Unfortunately, this project is already disappointing. Seventeen chickens have already died, while three others are in poor condition.

The efforts of local veterinarians to try to save this flock are not producing results. “We still don’t know the root of the problem with our farm. All the veterinarians’ efforts have been in vain,” said David Majambere, head of the DUKOMEZANYE cooperative. “Members are discouraged,” he added.

The problem is already known at the association level. Jean Marie Bigirimuremyi, president of AEVCPV, is reassuring the members of this cooperative. Soon, the association will be able to provide them with pigs so they can try pig farming.

The DUKOMEZANYE cooperative has more than 70 members. Under the new administrative boundaries, it is located in Mugere Commune, in Bujumbura Province, with direct access to Lake Tanganyika.
